Well into the resting period

I am doing all the resting and conservation I can at the moment, during my training break.

From year to year this break varies abit, based on how many small injuries you have to heal, the motivation for next year and general loss of fitness….

At the moment I am running every other day for about 20 minutes at a time. 20 times with strides in the middle to keep the muscular system going.

Really now much new from here. Enjoying the last days of “summer” in Oslo before the fall weather ๐Ÿ™‚

What a 10000 meter at the World Champs yesterday !

I watched the 10.000 meters at the World Champs yesterday and what a race it was. An exceptional run by all three first finishers. With an even race I would have predicted a time in the high 26.20s, very close to the World Record. The first 5000 was…

only 13.52.

I have been aware of Bekele for a few years now, after racing him in 2001 in a 3000 meter. He ran 7.30 for a new World junior world record and I did 7.40 for the Norwegian record in Brussels.

If he runs the 5000 meter it will be a great race. I still believe Chebii is just slightly faster in the finish (believe it or not) if he is healthy, but he has been having problems with a calf injury recently. Either way, the level on the long distances are better this year than in some time…

I am training every other day now, just to keep my body going abit. Doing strides and easy runs ๐Ÿ™‚

5000 meter and 1500 meter win at the Norwegian Champs

Even though the World Championship qualifier proved too difficult running solo on Friday, I had a fun weekend at the Norwegian Champs in Fredrikstad.

I did 13.46 in the 5000 meter on Friday before coming back for 1500 meter prelims Saturday…

and finals Sunday.

The 1500 meter ended up being quite close. I won it two years ago, with a 3.40 but this year the race was much slower and tactical. But after a 56/57 progressivly faster last lap I managed to just get ahead of the number two finisher. Which was especially satisfying with the other races in the legs and as I knew it would be difficult with some fast 800 meter runners in there (4 with prs 1.47 to 1.51).

First day of the Norwegian Championships tomorrow

The 5000 meter is tomorrow in the Norwegian Championships. My plan is to run it – for the first time in my career. Previously I have run only the 1500 meter (with a gold and a silver) as it has been very close to other important 5000 meter races…

plus I used to be a middle distance runner. This year, however, it fits nicely.

I am looking forward to running my favourite distance there finally. Then I will see what I will do about the 1500 meter on Sunday.

All well from here,

Marius

Heusden tomorrow

I am ready for the 5k in Belgium tomorrow. After a short period back in Norway…

A good field with a mix of very good athletes (13.00) and 1320 guys.

I will try and update more after the race ๐Ÿ™‚

Racing in Heusden the 2nd of August

In one week I will race a 5000 meter in Heusden, Belgium. It is a Grand Prix race so the level should be quite good.

Training has been going fine up here. A good mix of endurance and speed. It is important to respect the altitude (where…

anaerobic work has a much greater negative impact than at sea level) but at the same time be in the competition mode. To balance this is one of the keys to successful altitude training, in particular when you are in the middle of the season.

Interesting view yesterday ; Sepeng of South Africa (1.42 800), Bucher (1.42/World Champ 800) Som/1.43 800 and Liefers (3.31 1500 meter) were running a very hard track workout together on the St Moritz track. You very seldom see this kind of teaming up in training in the middle distances at that kind of level. Needless to say, the speeds were quite high ๐Ÿ™‚

All well,
Marius

Jim and myself left here

The other Norwegians have left St Moritz now and it is only me and Jim Svenoey left here.

We went on a long run together yesterday in a BLISTERING rainstorm. After waiting about 30 minutes for it to clear we saw no other way than to go. The…

weather can be quite harsh up here somtimes and change quickly. Today it it great weather again with 25 degrees and sun..

Both Jim and myself are searching for the World Championship qualifier. He has been quite close already also. If he does not qualify it would be the first time since 1993 he does not participate in the major championship that year (!) Name one other runner in the world who has been in the World Championships 1993, 95, 97, 99 and 2001. The European Championships 1994, 98 and 2002. Plus the Olympics 1996 and 2000…. and he made the finals of about half of them. (plus running in both the World Juniors and European Juniors before that..)

I will get back to the exact dates for competitions to qualify when we have plotted it for sure into the schedule. The time limit is the 13th.

Intervall session tomorrow by the lake close to Silvaplane, the town next to St. Moritz.

All well from here ๐Ÿ™‚

Perfect training possibilities – once again

I am very lucky to have discovered such a great training place as St Moritz. For the third year in a row I am here and it is simply great to be back.

This year we have also been very lucky with the weather. 25-26 degrees C and sun even day…

since I came. And of course quite nice and cool night temperatures up here in the Alps.

I went on a run with the athletes from the Netherlands yesterday. At very easy pace in the direction of Pontresina, the small village next to St Moritz. There was quite a nice level on the athletes in the group. Simon Vroemen (8.06 3000 steeple, European record), Jim Svenoey (8.12) Tom Combernolle (13.17 5000) Kamiel Maase (27.20s 10000) Karl Keska (13.20 5000) Sander Schutzen (13.30s) etc. This group went on a long run while the other people that met that morning, Dieter Baumann, Gert-Jan Liefers, Bram Som etc. took abit of a shorter route.

I like to be around athletes like this on the training camp. It is good to travle to places where you have plenty of people to train with such as Kenya and St Moritz.

Tomorrow is an easy day before an intervall session on Monday. I have very good indications down here from previous years and tests so that gives me a fair idea of where I am at.

All well here in Switzerland,

Marius

All well here in St Moritz

After spending the night in Oslo after the Rome meeting I left for St Moritz, Switzerland on Sunday to get some good training done again after five hard distance races in five weeks.

The race in Rome developed sort of like Bislett. Feeling…

very easy and relaxed up to 2000 meters (5.18) but then gradually just got locally tired in the quads after that. This kind of race developement is very rare for me as I usually have my strength at the end of races. It gives me a few ideas of what kind of work is needed now to find back to the shape I had about a month and a half ago. And the perfect place to do so is here in St Moritz where everything is right on the spot for distance running.

There is quite a few Norwegians here at the moment. Jim Svenoey (8.12 steepler), Karl Johan Rasmussen (about 2.14 marathon), Stine Larsen (2.27 marathon) plus two female 5000 meter runners at around 15.40. I was a bit surprised as I am used to being about the only Norwegian athlete down here this time a year. But is is nice with some company.

We all live right by St Moritz Bad, next to the running track and the running paths.

I am not yet sure how long I will stay here. It depends on the racing plan and progress from here on. I have another month to qualify for the Worlds so no hurry there. I only need to find back to where I normally am and I will be there ๐Ÿ™‚

All well here from the Swiss Alps,

Marius

Rome 5000 meter Friday

I am leaving tomorrow from here and will travel directly to Rome and the Golden League meeting there.

The aim of the race is to meet the World Championship qualifier of 13.25 that I missed with 8 seconds on Bislett. It is another month until…

the standard has to be met but it would be ok to do it now. Either way, I will travel to St. Moritz on Sunday after the race.

I have very good memories from Rome. I did 13.11 there in 2000 to break Lasse Virens Nordic record and also had a good race there the year after. The track is very hard (like most southern European tracks) and fast. And the crowd and atmosphere is great.

I will race either at 20.40 Norw/Italian time or 21.08. Two different schedules out there. Either way it will be broadcasted directly on the Norwegian NRK2.

Last update before Rome ๐Ÿ™‚
